The GEO CORE Summer Institute is designed to provide graduating high school students and first year college students with an in-depth knowledge of the environmental issues facing Long Island.

Throughout this four-week program, participants will work with GEO CORE staff and scientists from cooperating agencies to study firsthand the environmental issues being addressed by geologists, marine scientists, and atmospheric scientists within our communities. During each week of the program participants will visit specific field sites where they will learn correct observational and sampling techniques and explore how human activity affects our environment.

There is no cost to attend the GEO CORE Summer Institute. All students selected to participate are expected to attend the full program. Throughout the program students will work with GEO CORE staff to develop individualized projects documenting their experience, a specific aspect of the issues presented, and either offer a data-driven solution to the issues studied or an explanation for the data collected.

Daily Program

Participants will learn about the interactions among Long Island's aquifers, surface waters, and our coastal environments. Students will actively engage in the collection of data through the use of beach seines, plankton tows, and a YSI data logger to measure temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen and other environmental parameters, which will be analyzed graphically using Excel.

Daily Program


Participants will learn how to use numerical weather models to predict daily weather as well as predicting potential severe weather in order to alert the public. Attendees will also use portable weather equipment to observe microclimates around the campus. Field trips include visits to National Weather Service Forecast Office at Brookhaven National Laboratories, Islip MacArthur airport weather observation station and control tower, and the New York Air Route Traffic Control Center.

Daily Program

Participants will learn about Long Island geology, the movement of groundwater, the potential hazards to our groundwater system, and current remediation efforts. Students will work with real data provided by the Suffolk County Water Authority to produce accurate groundwater models, learn proper well sampling methods, and tour active remediation sites.
