Atmospheric Science Week

During this week participants will learn about the interactions among the atmosphere, Long Island's surface waters, and the impact of global warming on coastal environments. Participants will install weather monitoring equipment to record local weather data that will be compared to global data to illustrate the difference between weather and climate.

Participants will receive a presentation about the SOMAS Atmospheric Sciences program and then a short presentation about radar how it is used for research. Students will also tour two radar instruments and watch as they run in real time.

Participants will visit Long Island McArthur Airport and the National Aviation Center to learn how atmospheric scientists and air traffic controllers ensure flight safety across North America.

Numerical Weather Prediction

Participants will learn how to access satellite data, how atmospheric and surface variables influence local weather, and how to make local/national weather predictions.

Severe Weather and
Microclimates

Thursday, July 26, 2018

In this program participant will learn how to recognize the conditions that lead to severe weather systems. Participants will analyze satellite data and surface conditions to determine the probability and severity of severe weather systems. In the afternoon participants will learn how geology, ecology, and cultural structures influence local weather patterns and microclimates.
