Marine Science Week

Throughout this week students will learn about the interactions among Long Island's aquifers, surface waters, and our coastal environments. Students will actively engage in the collection of data through the use of beach seines, plankton tows, and a YSI data logger to measure temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen and other environmental parameters, which will be analyzed graphically using Excel.

Participants will learn about the ecology of the Peconic river and Pine Barrens ecology. While on site participant will study the salinity and dissolved oxygen of the Peconic river and collect plankton samples for analysis. In the afternoon participant will visit SCCC's marine science lab to learn about local marine species and analyze collected plankton samples.

Shinnecock Bay

Participants will tour Shinnecock bay onboard Stony Brook Univiersity's marine research vessel. While onboard participants will learn about the marine ecosystem and the environmental issues impacting the bay. Throughout the tour participants will conduct plankton tows, sediment grabs, dredge for marine life, and analyze water quality.

Participants will visit West Meadow Beach to learn about the importance of marine estuaries and the interaction between ground and surface waters. Participants will seine in order to collect and identify macro fauna while discussing the importance of salt marshes and the significance of spartina.

(FINS) Wilderness Visitor Center
and Old Inlet:

Participants will meet with a FINS park ranger to learn about the formation of Long Island’s barrier islands, their local ecology, and significance to the mainland. Following the discussion at the FINS visitor center, participants will walk to Old Inlet observing and discussing the effect of hurricanes and the impact of inlets on marine organisms and surface water quality.
